Venice wakes slowly in winter. Before the tourists arrive and the hum of the city begins, there’s a rare kind of stillness that settles over the stone. It was on one of these mornings that I found myself beneath the colonnades of the Doge’s Palace, long before the sun had risen above the rooftops.
